Every journey begins with a step, but often becomes much more than a movement from one place to another. It introduces us to new places, people, cultures, and experiences and sometimes changes the way we see the world and ourselves. When such experiences are expressed through words, they become the fascinating form of literature known as travel literature.
Travel has been an integral part of human life since ancient times. People have travelled for education, trade, pilgrimage, exploration, employment, and the discovery of new experiences. Their journeys have produced accounts of landscapes, people, cultures, traditions, and ways of life. Travel literature, therefore, is not merely a description of places; it reflects the traveller’s observations, experiences, thoughts, and responses. It also creates a meaningful connection between literature, culture, history, geography, and human experience.
The present book, Travel Literature, has been prepared in accordance with the T.Y.B.A. Minor English syllabus prescribed by Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) under the National Education Policy (NEP) pattern. It introduces students to the meaning, nature, characteristics, development, and major forms of travel literature in a clear and systematic manner. The prescribed texts explore themes such as cultural diversity, identity, human relationships, nature, social conditions, colonial experiences, and cultural encounters. The book also aims to develop students’ reading, comprehension, interpretation, and critical-thinking skills.
