Medicinal Plants in Traditional Systems Of Medicine

Traditional medicine in India includes the ancient system of Ayurveda, which
focuses on a holistic, natural approach to health, as well as other systems like Siddha,
Unani, Homeopathy, Yoga, and Naturopathy. Ayurveda is a science of life. It is the oldest
medical system. It is based on the concept of balancing three bodily humors (Tridoshas) by
regulating diet, lifestyle, and using herbal, mineral, and animal-derived products. These
to traditional systems are increasingly recognised and followed globally. Amla (Indian
gooseberry), or Emblica, and Tulsi are the most widely used herbs in all traditional Indian
systems of Medicine. As per NEP 2020, under the Indian Knowledge System (IKS), the
course IKS-BOT-T- Medicinal Plants in Traditional Systems of Medicine has been
implemented for S.Y.B.Sc. students for the first time.
This course under IKS-on Medicinal plants in Traditional Systems of medicine
includes an introduction to the course title under AYUSH, followed by the foundation
of Indian Medical thoughts on the concept of health, Tridosha, ancient Ayurvedic
knowledge on medicinal plants, concept of Ayurveda treatments, Yoga and health, Siddha
and Unani Systems, Ethno-medicines and scientific validation of ayurvedic practices, etc.
Thus, under AYUSH, Traditional systems of medicine and its integration with modern
medicines, values of ayurvedic treatments and medicines have been elaborated.
This is the NEP-2020 pattern, which is introducing for the first time various traditional
systems of medicine. We authors have taken seriously to present such medicinal concept
to our students, so much of our efforts have focused on the proper introduction of the
course matter in most simple way so that every student will understand the course matter.
