The implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) has brought significant changes to higher education by emphasizing multidisciplinary learning, critical thinking, skill development and a learner-centred approach. In keeping with these objectives, the curriculum of English at the undergraduate level has been redesigned to provide students with a broader understanding of literature and to strengthen their analytical, interpretative and communicative abilities. The present book, An Introduction to Novel in English, has been prepared in accordance with the new syllabus prescribed for T.Y.B.A. students of the colleges affiliated to Kavayitri Bahinabai Chaudhari North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon, with effect from the academic year 2026–27.
The novel is one of the most significant and widely studied forms of literature. It provides a broad canvas for representing human life, society, culture, relationships, conflicts and changing historical realities. Keeping this in view, An Introduction to Novel in English introduces students to the nature, scope, origin and development of the novel and explains its major elements such as plot, character, theme, conflict, setting, narrative technique, style and point of view. The book also discusses important types of novels including social, historical, political, epistolary, picaresque, regional, psychological, stream-of-consciousness, detective, science-fiction and campus novels.
The book further offers detailed critical studies of selected literary masterpieces. Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness is studied with reference to its historical context, plot, characterization, themes, conflict, setting, narrative technique, point of view and symbolism. George Orwell’s Animal Farm is examined as a significant political and allegorical novel, while the section on the background of the American novel traces its development from the Colonial and Revolutionary periods through Romanticism, Realism, Naturalism, Modernism and later trends. This is followed by a comprehensive study of Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea.
Another important section of the book deals with the background and development of the Indian novel in English, highlighting major trends and tendencies in the pre-Independence and post-Independence periods. R. K. Narayan’s The Guide is studied in detail with reference to its plot, characterization, themes, conflicts, setting, narrative technique, point of view and symbolism. A separate chapter on key literary terms related to fiction has also been included to familiarize students with the critical vocabulary necessary for the study and appreciation of novels.
Every effort has been made to present the subject matter in a clear, systematic, comprehensive and student-friendly manner. The discussions are designed not only to help students prepare for university examinations but also to develop their literary sensibility, critical thinking, interpretative ability and analytical skills. The organization of the book closely follows the prescribed syllabus while providing sufficient literary, historical and critical background for a better understanding of each topic and prescribed text.
