In recent years, the study of population has gained in importance because of the increasing realisation that an understanding of the processes underlying population changes, the factors associated with them and their consequences, is basic for any student of social and behavioural sciences. It is gratifying that the subject of population studies has now been included in the curricula at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels in several Universities. Instead of being the exclusive domain of research workers and the intellectual elite, as it was in the past, knowledge of population processes has become more democratised, and even the general public has started evincing interest in population problems.
The present work is perhaps the only book on population studies which is mainly based on Indian data and meant for Indian students. It will, therefore, be found to be useful to students and teachers alike, both at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. Even research scholars, we hope, will find it useful as an introduction to the subject, while the general reader will find much of interest in this book because it explains population processes in simple terms, after defining the various concepts.
