The book provides an analytical description of two core concepts: happiness and Wellbeing. The first two chapters offer a detailed exploration of what happiness means. The third and fourth chapters address Wellbeing in relation to positive emotions and mindfulness, while the fifth and sixth chapters focus on Emotional Intelligence, gratitude, and forgiveness.
Let us briefly understand the contents of these chapters in brief. The first chapter explains the meaning of happiness and its measurement. It distinguishes between Hedonic and Eudaimonic happiness and features scales such as the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), and the Global Happiness Scale. The chapter also highlights the difference between social Wellbeing and emotional Wellbeing.
The second chapter explores the relationship between life stages and happiness. It discusses how adults experience happiness differently from children and adolescents, particularly in the context of married life. The chapter also addresses how happiness can vary by gender, noting the psychological differences between masculinity and femininity. It emphasizes that happiness is a product of psychological experience rather than money or physical aspects.
The third chapter describes the relationship between positive emotions and Wellbeing. It includes Barbara Fredrickson’s Broaden and Build Theory of Positive Emotions and Martin Seligman’s PERMA model, both of which are related to happiness.
The fourth chapter focuses on mindfulness and Wellbeing. It defines mindfulness as attention to the present moment without judgment and discusses the importance of mindfulness and meditation.
This chapter enhances understanding of happiness as a psychological experience.
The fifth and sixth chapters examine how Emotional Intelligence, gratitude, and forgiveness contribute to happiness. Emotional Intelligence improves happiness through better emotional regulation, social relationships, resilience, coping skills, and decision-making. Practicing gratitude fosters a more enduring state of happiness, while forgiveness helps avoid emotional turmoil, stress, and resentment, thereby promoting individual happiness. These practices enable individuals to free themselves from negative emotions, which can be harmful to physical Wellbeing.
