This book, Studying Autobiography, prepared in accordance with the T.Y.B.A. Major English syllabus under the National Education Policy (NEP) Pattern prescribed by Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU). This book is a sincere and scholarly effort to provide students with a clear, systematic, and comprehensive understanding of autobiography as an important literary genre.
Autobiography is a significant form of life writing in which individuals narrate and reflect upon their own lives, experiences, struggles, achievements, relationships, and social surroundings. It provides not only a personal account of an individual's life but also offers valuable insights into the social, cultural, historical, and political contexts in which that life is shaped. The study of autobiography therefore enables students to understand the relationship between the individual and society, memory and identity, personal experience and collective history.
This book introduces students to the meaning, nature, characteristics, development, and major aspects of autobiography. It also familiarizes them with different approaches to the study of autobiographical writing and encourages them to critically examine the relationship between the self, society, culture, and history. The selected autobiographical texts provide opportunities for students to explore themes such as identity, childhood, education, gender, caste, class, struggle, discrimination, social change, and human resilience. The book aims to develop students' reading, analytical, interpretative, and critical thinking skills through the study of these texts.
