Cryptogams represent the most primitive and fascinating groups of plants that have played a significant role in the evolution of life on Earth. They include algae, fungi, bryophytes, and pteridophytes, which reproduce through spores and possess diverse structural and reproductive adaptations. The study of cryptogams provides valuable insights into plant evolution, biodiversity, ecological significance, and the origin of terrestrial vegetation. As aptly stated, “To understand the evolution of higher plants, one must first understand the world of cryptogams.”
The course T.Y.B.Sc. Botany (Semester V) BOT-301-MJT: Taxonomy of Cryptogams is designed according to the NEP-2020 curriculum of Savitribai Phule Pune University. It aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the diversity, classification, morphology, anatomy, reproduction, and evolutionary significance of cryptogamic plants.
The course introduces the fundamental concepts and characteristics of cryptogams, geological events associated with their origin and evolution, and the classification of major groups including algae, fungi, bryophytes, and pteridophytes.The syllabus also highlights important concepts such as the origin and evolution of pteridophytes, Carboniferous forests, cryptogamic herbaria, e-herbaria, and modern digital databases used in biodiversity studies.
The course is supported by BOT-305 MJP practical exercises designed to provide hands-on experience in the study of representative cryptogams. Students examine the taxonomy, morphology, anatomy, and reproductive structures of selected algae, fungi, bryophytes, and pteridophytes, thereby strengthening their understanding of the diversity and evolutionary significance of these groups.

This book will prove to be a valuable resource for students, teachers, and all those interested in the study of Cryptogamic Botany. Suggestions and constructive comments from readers will always be welcomed for the further improvement of this work.
