Vegetable seed production is an important branch of agricultural and plant sciences that plays a vital role in ensuring the availability of quality seeds, sustainable vegetable cultivation, improved productivity, and food security. The scientific study of vegetable seed production therefore provides students with an understanding of the principles and practices involved in producing genetically pure, healthy, viable, and high-quality seeds.
The course T.Y.B.Sc. Botany (Semester V) – BOT-341-MN-T: Vegetable Seed Production is designed in accordance with the NEP-2020 curriculum of Savitribai Phule Pune University. The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the concepts, principles, techniques, and applications of vegetable seed production. It introduces students to the history, present status, importance, and development of the vegetable seed industry, along with different approaches for the classification of vegetable crops based on botanical family, growing season, life cycle, plant part used for consumption, and method of cultivation.
The course further highlights important aspects of vegetable farming, hybridization techniques and important breeding methods. An important component of the course is vegetable nursery management.
The contents of this book have been organized in a simple, systematic, and student-friendly manner to facilitate effective learning and understanding. The book is intended to bridge theoretical knowledge with practical applications and to encourage students to develop interest in vegetable crop improvement, seed technology, nursery management, and sustainable vegetable production.
