Plant morphology called Phytomorphology is the study of the physical form and
external structure of plants. It is an important science as it is directly concerned with
knowing plant structure and thus in correct identification of the plant. Phytomorphology
represents a study of the development, form and structure of plants that helps in the
interpretation of various morphological patterns in the world of plants. The Board of
Studies in Botany of Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune taken one more important
step to introduce full course of plant morphology from Plant root to fruit – Bot 151-T-Plant
Morphology on the basis of which Practical Course Bot 152-P is now implemented from
this academic year 2025.This book is going to introduce you practical aspects of plant
morphology from root-shoot-Leaf-Inflorescence- flower-fruit and seed also.
The science of plant morphology was started by notable Germans Goethe, Goebel
Hofmeister, Troll, and others. Goethe, actually proposed the term morphology in 1790
that describes the physical form and external structure of plants. The practical course
on plant morphology includes the morphology of root, stem, leaf, inflorescence, flower,
floral whorls- calyx, corolla, perianth, androecium, gynoecium, and the morphology
of fruit and seed. We have tried to explain these parts of plants with the most suitable
figures to understand the practical aspects of plant structure. The readers of this book will
appreciate the style of practical presentation.
